HOW DO I APPLY?
The selection process begins in the autumn for Scholarships beginning in the following academic year.
Application material is available from universities (try your scholarship, careers or registrar's office), by post from the Kennedy Trust or as downloadable forms from this web page.
- You must research the course of graduate study at Harvard or MIT for which you intend to apply. The closing dates for applications to Harvard and MIT are later than the closing date for applying for a Kennedy Scholarship, but you must be able to tell the Trustees in your application about the programme of study for which you intend to apply.
- Read the Kennedy Scholarship prospectus for more detailed instructions.
- Complete an application form and write an account (which must not exceed 1,000 words) describing your academic pursuits, general activities, intellectual interests, plans for the future and reasons for wishing to study at Harvard or MIT. Make 7 copies of all this material.
- Contact 2 referees, at least one of whom must have supervised your work at university. One referee can send a reference direct to the Kennedy Trust to arrive by the closing date. The other reference should be attached to your application by your university.
- Take your application to the Head of your College, the Scholarship Office or Vice-Chancellor's Office of your university by the first closing date (the third Friday in October). A letter of support should be added by your University or College Head and then all the applications from your University or College will be forwarded together to the Kennedy Trust by the second closing date (usually the first Friday in November).
- If you are not currently a student, you should make your application to the Trust via the university from which you graduated.
- Shortlisted candidates are asked to attend for interview in early January. You will be contacted in mid-December and informed if you are being called to interview or not.
- Apply to Harvard or MIT at the appropriate time.
- If you need advice you can contact Anna Mason at the Trust Office.
